What is "Bacne"
"Bacne" is the name given to back acne. This can occur on the body in areas like the upper back, upper arms and the buttocks. Since the skin on the body is generally thicker than that of the face, the pores on the body are deeper. This means that "bacne" can be more painful than facial acne. Back acne starts to be seen around the time of puberty when hormones become active. Like facial acne it can be in the form of whiteheads, blackheads, pustules and nodules.
Why Does Back Acne Form?
Back acne is simply a clogged pore on your back. Now why do the pores of some people clog and others don't? Thats a good question and the exact reason is still not known for sure. However the following reasons definitely contribute to why you may have clogged pores.
Genetics - which you can't do much about!
Hormones - which you can affect through
Foods we eat
Chemicals
Lack of Sleep
Stress
Lack of Hygiene
Excessive sweat
So while there's little we can do to change our genetics we can influence how our hormones express themselves through the other 7 reasons.
Now, when a pore clogs, it is always caused by these 3 factors:-
P. acnes bacteria already present on skin
Excess skin cell shedding
Excess sebum production
The above 3 ingredients form a plug of debris that clogs the pores. This debris will continue to accumulate in the follicle until it gets so big and ruptures. When this happens, white blood cells come rushing in to surround the spilled debris which is now infected and inflamed. Depending on how deep down the follicle the rupture was, will determine how severe the acne is. A deep rupture will result in bad back acne, namely nodules and cysts.
What To Do For Back Acne?
Firstly, don't panic! Wear loose comfortable clothing that allows skin to breathe, like cotton. Try to avoid carrying anything on your back that may cause pressure or friction.(acne mechanica) Be mindful of good hygiene and wash twice daily with a salicylic acid body wash. This will exfoliate the top dead layer of skin, cut through oil to clean out the pores and kill the excess P. acnes bacteria.
Do not let sweat build up as this can block your pores. Look for a back acne treatment that includes a salicylic acid spray. This is key and is perfect for those hard to reach areas like the middle of your upper back. Keep the spray on hand and spritz a few times a day to keep acne at bay. Be sure to do this after a workout if you are not able to take a shower right away.
Eat mindfully and healthfully. Choose foods low in saturated fats, avoid dairy products ( they have hormones known to make acne worse) and aim for carbohydatres which are low on the GI (Glycemic Index) This will keep blood sugar levels stable and help to normalize sebum production.
Be sure to get enough zinc, selenium and magnesium and include a good probiotic in your daily regimen.
