The very first "motivational speaker" I heard as an adult was a gentleman named Mort Utley.  I experienced his speech in May of 1989 in Nashville, Tennessee, at the end of a week of Sales School with the Southwestern Company.

Five Tips for Perfect Transition Decisions

You're considering a new career, new place to live or new business, retirement, or any other move. You ask, "Will I be happy?" If you remember the old, old song, "What will be" may not be the answer you're looking for.

What Am I Going To Do With The Rest Of My Life?

Unexpected life changes. Anticipated transitions.

Make The Second Half The Best Half

Something happens when you come to the intersection called mid-life; you can look back in retrospect and see your life from an entirely different context. For many this mid-life review brings about a sense of urgency that ignites what is formally called "the mid-life crisis".

Life Versus Lifestyle

There is a difference but what constitutes a life and what constitutes a lifestyle is pretty ambiguous.  One thing that seems pretty clear to me is the lifestyle is observable while a life can have many internal aspects to it.

The One-Two Punch for Success: Authenticity and Alignment

Have you ever felt as if you are beating your head against a wall?  You repeatedly try to reach a goal but you never seem to achieve it.  Instead you are struggling rather than moving forward and achieving your goals with grace and ease.

The Reasons Why We Fear Success

In the book, The SHOCKwealth System?, it is discussed that there are four fears that must be overcome in order to experience true success. One of those fears is the fear of success itself.

The Gravitational Pull of ANTs, WORMS & FEARS

What is an ANT? An ANT is an acronym for Automatic Negative Thoughts. What is a WORM? A WORM is a metaphor for deep-seated, unconscious beliefs that lye dormant in our consciousness analogous to a computer virus that only activates when a certain button is pushed on our keyboard.

Control Your Fear Before It Controls You

"Fear Factor" is one of my favorite TV shows.  It highlights the courage of the participants to engage inthe most fearsome and disgusting acts.

Live Your Life To The Fullest

Do you sometimes feel that you're living a boring life?  Youjust can't seem to find anything exciting.  You wake up in the morning, then do the same old rituals.

Did you know that your past, present, and future can affectdirectly or indirectly your outlook in life?  THE PAST Have you ever done something that is so regrettable you couldn'tforgive yourself? Imagine that right now, right here, today? there is within your grasp not one but several opportunities to redesign specific aspects of your life so that the sum total is a life you absolutely love. Wait, Thats Not on the Map

Back from my amazing summer excursion, a month long drive through Spain!  Well, I mean, I didn't do any of the driving, my partner did.  See, I only know how to drive an automatic and since we have a stick here in Belgium, my partner kindly agreed to do all the driving.

Are You Where You Want To Be In Life
Are you where you want to be in life - financially, health-wise, relationships or your career? Silly question? I don't think so. I've asked myself this question dozens of times during my life and I have to admit more often than not the answer to one of the life areas was - no. In life, you can only be one of three places (I'm being general here) - where you were or have been, where you are now and where you will be in the future. I know this might at first seem a bit confusing but think about it - for example - where are you now - in your car, your office your kitchen or backyard - the simple answers. Where do you want to be tomorrow

Brokenness - A Blessing Or A Curse
Have you ever experienced brokenness? Not sure how to define brokenness? Doing whatever you can to avoid being broken? Just to be clear - I'm not referring here to your broken toilet, car or computer - I'm talking about your spirit, your relationships, your career or even your life. If you don't like where you think this article is headed do yourself a favor and go back to your - whatever, but if you have ever experienced brokenness of any kind, my hope is to help you grow from it, learn from it and pass through it with dignity, courage, faith and yes even speed if that is possible.

Good Days Or Bad Days
Ever had a bad day... a good one? Had more bad ones than good ones in a week or month? Had more good ones in a year than you feel you deserved? Dumb questions? Well, trust me I have a lot more, but I'll save them for another time but let me ask you two more... How do you define good and bad? And, in the end, which ones helped you grow, learn, become or contribute more to others? More dumb questions? I don't think so but I'm writing this article so the real answers are up to you, but I would ask you to finish reading before you decide on your answers. So here goes.

Learn How to Cultivate Self-Discipline As a Success Mindset
Do you understand the connection between what you think and the success you experience, or do not experience, in your job or career? If you could learn to discipline your thoughts towards an attitude of success, do you believe it is possible you could in turn become successful? There is a well-known phrase that talks about the importance of working smarter and while there are many interpretations of what it can mean, overall it is meant to emphasize the benefits of being focused, disciplined, and working hard. Hard work is the backbone of any career but over time, and when routine work habits are established and set in, the effort that a person exerts may become conditionally based. It could be due to a person's perception of a "bad" boss, poor working conditions, not receiving a pay increase or recognition for their effort, and the list continues. While there may certainly be merit to these feelings, it serves no real purpose to make working hard a conditional characteristic of your job performance.

Is The Time Bomb In Your Head Killing You
Everyone has this time bomb in their head - it's ticking - for some folks it's ticking so fast they are heading for the grave before they know it. For others - it's ticking but it's just slowly ticking and stealing the value of life from their life. Are you slowly killing yourself?

Is The Grass Really Greener On The Other Side Of The Street
Most people are searching for only a few fundamental things in life. I believe the significant ones are to be loved and to give love, acceptance for who they are and who they are becoming, appreciation, validation, respect and the opportunity to be happy, successful, safe and content. All of the other stuff you and I say we want - and the list is far too long to share here - is often just an elusive dream. It could be time to start doing a better job of nurturing your own lawn, garden (life) than the people you seem to envy are doing.

Soft But Sure - The Necessity for Soft Skills in Business Studies and in Business!
The current era is a challenging professional time to be entering the workforce. The age old path followed by the parents of the youngsters today - get a couple of college degrees or learn a professional and technical skill, then get a relevant job and stay in the same place for an entire career - is obsolete and no longer viable. Most of the people aspiring to join the current workforce must not only specialize in particular job-related skill sets, but will also need to upskill and cross skill as they move jobs - and even industries - frequently in...

Success Lessons: What Greek Tycoon Aristotle Onassis's Life Reveals
Aristotle Onassis passed in his life through many good and bad seasons. In 1925 the bad season he experienced till that year (he was penniless in Argentina), suddenly ended, and a good season started for him: his career as a ship owner began and continued. In 1941, however, a new bad season started that lasted till 1956, when he was faced with bankruptcy. But in 1957, that bad season suddenly ended, and a new good season started, when the Suez Canal closed to shipping and he began becoming the wealthiest person on earth. Finally, however, in 1974, a new reversal of seasons happened again in his life: his good season ended that year and a bad one started, when his beloved son Alexander was killed in a plane crash, and Onassis began to suffer from myasthenia gravis that led him finally to death.

Subtraction Is Greater Than Addition
I just came out of a mentoring session with my mentor Linda Hutchings what a great reminder it was to take my own medicine and keep it clean by making things simple. Perhaps like me you're a multi-passionate entrepreneur or leader who has 50 business ideas a day and struggles to decide which one to implement first. As I talked to Linda about some of my latest ideas of launching a new podcast, relaunching a group coaching program, beginning writing another book (I have two underway already), I began to hear the folly of my thoughts.

So... you think you really know me - my faults and my strengths, my history and my goals, my fears, and my desires and yes, all the pain and disappointments, failures and troubles and yes, achievements I have had? Well, I have news for you - I don't really know you and you will never really know me. Let me ask you - do any of us really know anyone? Will we ever really know anyone? Can we ever really know anyone? The answers are; no, no and NO. Don't believe me... read on.

Want Something In Life To Change - Start Looking In The Mirror
If you are overweight - it's most likely because you have accepted your condition. If you are broke - it's probably because you are unwilling to do what you need to do to get out from under. If you are staying in a negative relationship - I'll wager, it's because you have settled for one or more reasons. If you are in a career or job you hate - I'll bet it's because you are being driven by fear and doubt rather than faith and/or trust. If your health is not ideal, I'm guessing that there is some personal behavior that is in one way or another contributing to your malaise. If you have a department or staff section in your organization that is not performing to expectations - I'll guarantee it's because you tolerate the behavior, or you may be even contributing to it with your management style. Life is a process, not an event. You are always moving toward something or away from it and "it" is a neutral concept. "It" doesn't judge, persuade, reward or blame "it" is just is life one moment, one day and one year at a time.

It's Becoming A Very Different World
As I reflect on where we seem to be today as a society versus just a few short years ago I have to wonder - will we as a world and society in the US like where we end up in a few years if we keep heading in this crazy, dubious and out of control direction? Just consider a few of the simple things like - common courtesies, basic manners, caring more about others than yourself, the ability to share your thoughts and ideas freely without concern for retribution or backlash, the ability to dress, yes respectably, but freely. The ability to travel without fear. The lack of selfie-oriented behaviors. The ability to challenge people who are misrepresenting the truth that is evident to everyone but the person talking. The ability to freely express your spiritual values or beliefs without getting thrown out of school, work or the local pub. Need I go on?

Stop Pandering, Pampering, Coddling Certain Employee Groups - It's Stupid
Let me say from the outset - I will guarantee many people who read this article will disagree with my premises, but here's the problem - just because I wrote it doesn't make it true and just because you may disagree with it doesn't make it false. Now that we have that out of the way. Let me also mention that trends over the years have always ended and been replaced with different, newer or more timely ones as the future was unveiled - so consider that this trend of letting the needs, concerns or wants of a current group of people (or employees) dictate the overall strategy of how we should manage our organization may not be the best strategy for the long term - as one group moves into the next phase of life they will be replaced with yet another group who may have different needs, wants or lifestyle.

How to Overcome the Power of Sin in Your Life
People might say it is impossible to live a life free from sin and fulfill the law like Jesus did. Although it is true that before the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ the people were spiritually dead and incapable of fulfilling the law, but a Christian is no longer spiritually dead, but alive unto God and very capable of fulfilling the law. Let's see what God's word has to say about this controversial subject.

Life Is Like A Game Of Chess
I'm not a chess player but over the years I have watched many of my friends play the game. But I can play checkers - not that it matters. Recently as I was watching a couple of friends play the thought occurred to me that chess is a lot like life - it's uncertainty, it's adventure, it's exhilaration and yes, it's a disappointment. Watching caused me to consider three life areas;

Regrets Or Lessons Learned
Regret can have a significant negative impact on every aspect of your future - your career, relationships, health and even your happiness and why? Well for starters it keeps you stuck in the past, something that you can't do anything about. But just as important it can have a major negative impact on your present and your future. Basically, regret is how we choose to define the past - decisions, actions, outcomes, experiences and even people in our life. Another way to view these decisions, circumstances and the rest is to see them as lessons learned. The only problem with this approach is you must do some "inner work" to discover what the learning could be or have been. But let me get back to that in a minute or so.

Every Day You Are Getting Closer To
Closer to what? Well, think about it - closer to your last day. I'm not being morbid here, believe me, but I'm asking you to consider - do you know how much time you have left? If not sure how to answer I'll do it for you - No One does! And yet it's amazing how many people act as they have forever by squandering days, weeks and even years with no purpose, passion, joy or a sense of adventure and gratitude for the time they are given. Retire if you will. Quit if you must. Give up if you are tired of fighting. Surrender if you feel like life is over. Had enough? OK - Settle if you feel you don't deserve better. Stop trying if you are tired of losing. Cave into others if you are over being criticized, invalidated or belittled. Trust me I can go on with this babble if you want but personally - it's hard to even write this stuff sometimes.

Do Convictions Matter
Everyone has convictions whether they are aware of them or not and how they contribute to the quality of their life. Our convictions keep moving us closer and closer to their natural outcomes with or without our cooperation or our resistance and whether they are positive or negative. There are a number of critical life areas that contribute to our ultimate success, happiness and lifestyle, but one of the most important ones is - our convictions. What is a conviction? It's simple - it's something you believe to be true or a firmly help opinion about anything. It doesn't matter whether it is true or right or not, the bottom line is that you believe it and it, therefore, influences and often determines many of our behaviors, attitudes, decisions and life outcomes.

What If You Could Reverse A Previous Life Decision Or Action
No, I'm not Scrooge - Past Present and future. But just wondering - have you ever in hindsight considered how your life might be different today if you could go back in time and reverse a decision or action you took years ago? Wish you had said no rather than yes at the Altar? Wish you had said yes rather than no for a job transfer? Ever said - I'll think about it before you said yes or no to a purchase, investment or opportunity? I could go on with hundreds more of examples but as we approach the end of another year, I'm sure many people reflect on the quality of some aspect of their lives and how it might have been better or worse in some way if they had made a different decision or taken a different action?

There Are Three Types Of Dying That Prevent Success
Notice the title isn't three types of death. Most people when they consider the concept of death only think about physical death, but I believe there are two others that are just as serious although not as permanent as the final one. Yes, we are all one day going to die. It's a given regardless of your gender, race, nationality, age, education, wealth, lifestyle, spiritual values or any other life area or circumstance. But before we die is it possible to slowly die in other ways? I believe the answer is yes. In my opinion, the other two types of dying are emotional dying and then there is spiritual dying, let me explain.

Your Life's Report Card - How Are You Doing?
Remember when you were in high school or even elementary school you used to get a report card every few months? If you behaved, did your homework and studied, you might have received a B or even an A. But if you slacked off in some or every way you most likely had to explain to your parents why you got a D or even an F. Basically, your grade was your teacher's opinion or rating of how they felt you were doing with your responsibilities, actions, and behaviors. Think you are still getting report cards today when you are in your 30's or even your 60's? Oh, the teachers have most likely retired or have moved on to new classes and different students but trust me, life is still giving you a report card- every day, every month and yes, every year.

Second Chances
Do we all need a second chance from time to time? How about a third one? Or more? Ever had a second chance and ignored it? Ever had a second chance and in hindsight realized that it positively changed the trajectory of your life in some way? These questions are not redundant. We all get second chances, even more, that we ignore, don't realize or even spurn for any number of reasons. How about a second - health chance? How about a second - career chance? How Do You Answer, Who Do You Think You Are?
Having a sense of who we are is important as the foundation stone we're able to build upon, but being excessively self-promotional can be a massive turn off. It's always good to leave space for others to offer their opinions, give praise and identify areas where they're ready and willing to recommend and enthuse about you. Allow others to be complimentary and let them become your ambassadors.

The Pain And Stupidity Of Comparison
Many people's idea of success is nothing more than a comparison of them to others. And who do you think these folks compare themselves too - people; who are smarter, wealthier, happier, more attractive, more influential, or just better off in some way? I seriously doubt it. These folks, to feel better about themselves in some or in any area of their lives must look better than others. I know, because there was a time in my past when I was guilty of this stupid life philosophy.

Is It Time For Some New Definitions?
Let me ask you - how many friends do you have on Facebook or LinkedIn that you don't know, have never met and have never talked to? If I had to guess, I'll wager it's most of the people on the various sites you are connected with. Am I right? OK, so after several years of social media redirecting and controlling our lives I believe it's time for a few new definitions. Agree, disagree, like, don't like - doesn't matter - I will guarantee how you define the following has changed in the past few or several years. I'll give you the traditional (dictionary) definition first them mine. Feel free to add yours if inclined.

So Much Of Life Is Wasted - Waiting
Waiting for the right job. Waiting for the perfect relationship. Waiting for the right weather. And, even just waiting for the right email or text response. Ever waited for something and in hindsight realized how much time was wasted? I know I have and I also know the pain of not being able to recapture those lost minutes, weeks or even years - they were gone forever. But it's not my intent to be morbid here but to suggest some creative, positive and even risky thoughts on what lies ahead, what is real, what you can control and what can or will elude you no matter how hard you try or how long you wait. First of all, there are three types of waiting - waiting for something to begin, waiting for something to end, or waiting for something to improve, change or maybe even recover

Just Because It Feels Right Doesn't Make It Right
You would be amazed at how many people let their feelings rather than common sense or reality determine their attitudes, behavior, and decisions. Now, I'm not implying that all feelings are not appropriate or don't have value when it comes to life and career choices and actions but in a world driven today by so many emotional circumstances you might just want to pause or even check your feelings at the door before you make serious decisions or react or respond to various situations. Let me give you a couple of real examples that I have witnessed in the past several days while on the road speaking in several states.
